Detailed information about all participants (discourse, music, literature, music talks, lab) can be found in German and English language, as well as tour dates and general information about the festival.

The Elevate mp3 podcast was also started and you can subscribe here.

With discussions, presentations and workshops alongside the Austrian premiere of four documentaries the Elevate Festival bearing the slogan “Elevate the 21st Century” will start on Thursday, October 20th in Graz. Johan Galtung from Norway, the “father of academic peace-research” current chairman of Greenpeace International, Kumi Naidoo, and filmmaker and two-time Sundance Festival Winner, Ondi Timoner, are just some of the renowned guests, who will reflect upon ideas and expectations of life in the future that existed in the past century, as well as shed light on visions which have a large potential to shape our future.26 Events will feature debates on the fast pace of change in these days of technological advancement and the dangers of the multiple crises situations such as labour and manufacturing in the 21st century. Elevate gives visitors the opportunity to actively discuss topics during the event. Alongside the Elevate Media Channel (live video streams of the festival), a new microblogging system has been implemented.

Elevate Festival 2010

From October 21st to 26th, Graz’s Elevate Festival once again stimulates new ways of thinking and listening through an extraordinary combination of electronic music, art and political discourse. Elevate highlights the role and importance of social movements as well as progressive initiatives in civil society and the importance of generating positive change in our society as a whole. At the same time, Elevate presents many live acts that offer fascinating odysseys into innovative worlds of sound far off the beaten path.

Elevate Civil Society – Discourse and Film Programme

Change! Mobilize! Communicate! These three catchwords highlight the practice-oriented approach of this year’s discourse programme. Together with international stars like Mike Bonanno of the YES MEN and representatives of some of the world’s largest grassroots environmental organisations, such as Nnimmo Bassey of Friends of the Earth International and Bill Mc Kibben of 350.org, Elevate aims to raise both awareness and motivation for personal and collective action. That means no more standing around and watching, but coming together to develop strategies for combating the climate crisis, social inequality and the economic crisis. Renowned experts and activists from Austria and abroad will discuss the importance and the possibilities of personal involvement, citizens’ initiatives and social movements from both global and local perspectives. The accompanying documentary film programme will further the discourse and includes the Austrian premiere of „Cultures of Resistance“ (USA/2010).

Music On The Edge

Presenting an eclectic array of styles, the performing artists at the festival have one thing in common: the courage to break away from conventions and expressing their creative work in their own voice, beyond the mainstream. That being said, Elevate offers a musical journey away from well-known Best-Of-Sets, challenging both artists and audiences alike. Newcomers like Mount Kimbie, Hudson Mohawke and Joy Orbison perform alongside established stars like Robert Hood, Terre Thaemlitz and Merzbow. In selecting the acts, the focus was set on innovation and the willingness to look beyond one’s own backyard. Artistic horizons can be explored, shared and expanded not only at live-shows but also at workshops on music production, online radio and visual art, as well as at the scheduled discussion on music journalism.

Innovations at the Elevate Festival 2010

The new Elevate Mediachannel, a five-day media experiment, will broadcast content online 24 hours a day, airing numerous live discussions, lectures and performances as well as music videos and documentary films. As in previous years, the Vienna-based Okto.tv will feature selected events live on Austrian cable television.

Another innovation in the festival’s artistic programme is a collaboration with the Kulturzentrum bei den Minoriten, which will provide a three days special music & literature presentation. Artists from both genres will perform together creating a space for exciting experiments.

Speakers and Panelists:

Mike Bonanno of the Yes Men (US), Nnimmo Bassey (NG), Iara Lee (BR), Bill McKibben (US), Anjali Kamat (IN), Rob Hopkins (UK), Wenonah Hauter (US) Béatrice Achaleke (AT), Kathrin Hartmann (DE), Hans Zeger (AT), Tadzio Müller (DE), Frederick Baker (UK), Robert Foltin (AT), Klaus Schönberger (DE), Ove Sutter (AT), Irmi Salzer (AT), Franziskus Forster (AT), Clemens Apprich (AT), Gerald Bäck (AT), Wolfang Rehm (AT), Rahel Sophia Süß (AT), & many more

Documentary Films:

ELEVATE – Festival for contemporary music, art and political discourse
Nov 5 – 9 2008, Graz

Four nights packed with concerts, live acts, and DJs from all over the world. Four days of lectures, discussions, workshops, installations and performances from (independent) organizations, critical thinkers, activists and artists. Most events take place in venues carved inside the historic Schlossberg – the hill in the center of Graz.

The aim of Elevate 2008 is, together with scientists and activists, to raise awareness of the importance of the commons and to shed light on the social and cultural conflicts in the usage of these goods. This will be the framework for discussions, workshops, films and lectures as well as for the presentation of innovative projects.

Numerous workshops within the framework of the Elevate Lab in Forum Stadtpark offer local artists the chance to get to know the international festival guests. An Audio/Visual performance (DJ Spooky), interventions in public space and light experiments (in cooperation with TU Graz) guarantee a new atmosphere in and around the Schlossberg Graz. Guest curators like DJ Scotch Egg from Japan provide for unforgettable experiences during the nightly music programme.

What do the privatization of water, the flourishing remix culture, the genetic information of a tropical plant, and open source software development all have in common?

They are all part of the fiercely contested commons; natural, cultural and social resources which we have inherited from the natural world or which have been developed through collective processes. In essence, they form the foundation of our lives.

Commons are the basis for the production of food and pharmaceuticals. They are as important for breathing as they are for social networks. We need them to interact, produce and deliver knowledge, art and culture, to move and to regenerate. There can be no sane society without intact common resources.

participating are:

Farmer and winner of the Right Livelihood Award 2007, Percy Schmeiser (CA); musician, author and multimedia artist, Paul D. Miller a.k.a. DJ Spooky (US); journalist and Science Commons expert, Kaitlin Thaney (US); leader of Creative Commons Brazil, author and professor of law, Ronaldo Lemos (BR); author and Commons expert, David Bollier (US); founder of the Free Knowledge Network, Petra Buhr (DE); Commons activist and blogger Silke Helfrich (DE); Anne Schweigler (DE) from the BUKO campaign against biopiracy; political scientist and economist Massimo De Angelis (UK); Michael Tuck (US) from History Commons; Hans-Jochen Luhmann (DE) from the Institute of climate, environment and energy in Wuppertal; bestselling author and publicist Christian Felber (AT); board of iCommons member and “public project lead” of Creative Commons Netherlands, Paul Keller (NL); Stefan Meretz (DE), who studies the political economy of the free software movement; expert for international political economy and climate change, Achim Brunnengräber (DE); “legal project lead” of Creative Commons Austria, Florian Philapitsch (AT); co-director of the documentary film “Good Copy Bad Copy”, Henrik Moltke (DK); and many more

All events are free of charge!

Artistic and musical innovations as well as the interaction of artists from various parts of the festival are the central themes of the 2008 programme. Shying away from superlatives, but rather opening the possibility for encounters in the intimate atmosphere of individual club nights, with artists and genres that are largely still unknown in this country. More than a hundred artists from twelve nations, most of who will perform live, cater to stylistic diversity.
